Making The Linden Performer

The Process

Motion Capture Session 1

The First Performance

In this scene, it is Mary's first time dancing for an audience, as well as one of her first times dancing ever. To convey this, our choreographer performed these early dances almost entirely improvisationally, with only a few simple key directions such as "a big dramatic spin as the music swells" (00:25)

We went on to utilize this technique throughout the entire motion capture process, varying how much each scene was rehearsed based on how comfortable and well practiced the character would be with each new experience.

Character/World Interactivity

Motion Capture Acting

Creating believable interactions between the world and the main character was one of the most challenging parts of the motion capture process. A variety of DIY props were used to create an intuitive and authentic result from each performance.

The String Pulling

Our most frequently used technique on this project was using jacket sleeves to simulate taut restraints around various parts of the body.

The Linden Performer

A marionette dreams of becoming a performer. When she gets the chance to live that life, she starts to realize that it's not what she thought it would be.

The Early Animatic

This rough animatic was used early on during pre-production, and contains the original scratch track that was used during the motion capture process. The final music and all additional previsualization was done in 3D during early production.
